New production supported by anonymous donor
Teenage Traveller girls and young women are to script, edit and produce their own film after receiving support from an anonymous donor through The Community Foundation for Ireland.
The West Cork Traveller Centre is being supported for a unique production which aims to give voice to some of the most marginalised people in the country. Participants will be introduced to every aspect of the art of film making.
Girls will learn about camera, lighting, costume, acting, choreography, hair and make-up, script, song-writing, production design, technical editing, and sound. Creative professionals will be engaged to act as mentors and to guide participants to turn their vision into reality.
The participants will learn all about the industry and will be encouraged to form mentoring relationships in the fields that they discover an interest in, and might subsequently wish to pursue.
Lead Artist Toma McCullim was the Production Designer for the internationally award winning film ‘Float Like a Butterfly’ and brings with her a wealth of relationships with some of Ireland’s top female film industry professionals. West Cork Traveller Development Worker Charlotte Donovan (herself an experienced Community Collaborative Artist), together with the team of staff and the wider community, will provide support for this venture.

It is hoped that this unique venture will offer a mentoring model for other marginalised groups to follow so that they too can amplify their voices by using the arts.
Toddy Hogan, CEO of the West Cork Traveller Centre said “We are delighted and very excited to receive this anonymous donor arts funding for what is an innovative project working with young Traveller girls to provide an arts focused learning & mentoring environment in their local area”
Denise Charlton, Chief Executive of The Community Foundation for Ireland added “The arts have a huge role to play to ensure equality for all in thriving communities. Our anonymous donor is passionate about equality of access and to using the visual arts to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard. This is an exciting project. We look forward to the excitement and energy which this project will generate and to viewing the final production.”
